So, yesterday's announcement came as a huge disappointment to me as an Iphone 6 user. What I wanted was the XR but the size of an X as I find the 6 to be the sweet spot in terms of size, but happy that the X is slightly bigger. The XR seems to be between the 8 and 8 plus (the latter being ludicrously big) so may not be a deal breaker but I do wonder how good it will be given that they have done it on the cheap. Another option would be to see what happens to the price of the X, however given that it is discontinued I imagine it will hold its price due to supply and demand.

I don't have 3D touch so won't miss it if I went for an XR, so that is something.

Any advice? What are other 6 users going for?

I'm lucky in that I think I can hold on for another year, and hope they bring out something rational.

It's telling that on the XR product page https://www.apple.com/iphone-xr/ when you scroll down to the "All-screen makes all the difference" comparison, the initial other product shown is the iPhone 8 Plus. Not the 8. Change to iPhone 8 and it looks TINY! Then I look at my 6 on the table and think "WHAT? Bigger than that?!!". Ugh, no thanks - I'm not sure an XR would fit in my jeans.

If I absolutely had to get a new phone this year, I'd probably go to an Apple Store, have a good look at the XR, and if the size really wasn't doing it for me, get an 8. Yes, it's missing Face ID, and has bezels, but it's still a damn good phone for the price, has all the important internal stuff that the X has, and now that an iPhone seems to be supported for 5 years with software (the 5s, a 2013 phone, is getting iOS 12), it'll have a good, long life. The 8 is the pinnacle of the '6' era of phone design, highly refined, and that shouldn't be undervalued IMO.
