Did I miss anything about this because I don't recall reading anything about the 6 that indicates resistance to liquid (only the watch had mention).

Spills and accidents happen. I wish Apple would take into account.

I've never gotten my iPhone wet in the seven years I've owned one.
 
They want you to buy Applecare+ which is priced close to a Lifeproof case. Waterproof is a gimmick and it is not always failproof hence why consumers have issue with waterproof cases. The Galaxy S5 is water resistant but basically does nothing to protect the phone if it's dropped in a large amount of liquid.
 
This is one thing Apple got right. Those rubber-coated, fragile, plastic port cover flaps are horrendous. They break off in no time and look naaaaasty. If you go near water all the time then buy a waterproof case, and if you use your phone in the bathroom whilst out drinking...don't.
