tl;dr - should Apple update iOS so the iPhone's WiFi tether settings offer more choices like 5GHz over 2.4GHz and wireless a/b/g/n?
I think with a new update the iPhone should have better WiFi tether settings....it only uses 2.4GHz 802.11n which makes sense for compatibility and while the iPhone does a good job of choosing which channel to use based on what other channels nearby routers may be using its not perfect. Also 5GHz would be PERFECT for tethering given the short distance needed for it and it would cut down on interference in large areas where people may be tethering...one could additionally use 20MHz or better yet 40MHz wide channels on 5GHz 802.11n (still backwards compatible wit 802.11a) for better throughput...in the age of LTE being up to 150Mbps or even 300Mbps or higher the 802.11n 2.4GHz 20MHz channel max's out at 73Mbps on average devices that are only single stream...I realize Apple likes to keep it simple but on Android they offer allot more features....I guess I'd like the choice, nothing fancy but I'd like an option just below the "WiFi password" section
Automatic setup / Manual setup (below)
WiFi Mode: 802.11b / 802.11g / 802.11n
WiFi Frequency Band: 2.4GHz / 5GHz
WiFi channel width: 20MHz / 40MHz (5GHz only)
Also the addition of 802.11b may sound outdated but I had a friend try and tether her old device (forgot the specifics but it was only 802.11b) and it refused to connect...I've noticed that many wireless B and even Wireless G devices don't play nice with the newer iPhone's WiFi tethering...my iPhone 4 played relatively nice, but my iPhone 5c and iPhone 6 cut out some older devices that I would have enjoyed tethering....I don't think it could hurt to have. I'd say the update could easily apply to the iPhone 5/5c/5s/6/6+ since they all support the 5GHz band and likely have the chipset support most capable...if not then I'm sure the 6/6+ are able to do it.
What do you guys think? Discuss and give your input as well as personal experiences with WiFi tethering with old and new devices alike!
