Batteries do get warm when charged, especially when in enclosed spaces like the inside of an iPhone. The metal casing will also radiate heat. If it gets so hot that it's uncomfortable to hold then something is wrong.
All my iPhones I've had have become warm to the touch near the battery when charging. Its just normal for such small devices. If its been by your Mac's exhaust port or sitting above the CPU area on your computer, that will heat it up too.
