Sorry to hear. If you have set your phone up properly and have find my iPhone turned on you can Log onto to a computer and login to iCloud.com. From there you can attempt to see if your phone is online and if it can be pinged. If it can’t you can put the phone in list mode and notify your carrier so the phone is blacklisted.

Hopefully your phone is backed up and secured properly.

I hope you had your security features switched on as Newtons Apple says. It's too easy with being indoors not to use face or touch ID switched on. There's also your passcode which you should memorise.

It's amazing how many people don't have security features activated for smart phones. When you think about it, your phone is a microcosm of your life and I always have them turned on; same goes for my iPad and MacBook.

Even with security features turned on there is little chance of recovery unless the thief leaves the phone on and you have a police department with lots of spare time or you visit the thief yourself (not recommended).

I don't quite get why people steal phones these days, the more tech savvy amongst them knowing it's a brick.

It takes a little while for thieves to catch on. They tend to be devious and street smart, not actually intelligent or tech-saavy,

You wouldn't believe how many Activation Lock sob stories there were in the MacRumors jailbreak forums the year after Apple first came out with it. It didn't start to taper off until about two years later.

First they 'found it'. Then it became a 'gift' from a friend or relative, then moved on to 'my dead so and so'. Now if we get one at all it's "I forgot my credentials".

But this is how dumb criminals tend to be. Of course you're going to ask how to bypass Activation Lock in the jailbreak forums. Because, you know…JAILBREAK. Like in the name, right?

No. Not at all. :)

Not really. At least in my case anyway. Or, perhaps my life is just boring as hell to someone else.

Anything important enough to value is removed from my phone somewhere else. It doesn't stay on my device for long. Anything so private I wouldn't want anyone to read or see is never written or taken. It is discussed in person, either face to face or with a phone call. I can get my email on any device I own or have access to. I use other devices for the things people now tend to use their phone for. It's a phone, not a media device to me.

I do not want someone stealing my phone and I would be upset if it happened. But my life is not on my phone.

The majority of petty thieves are probably not tech savvy at all. Or they know they can sell it quickly to someone else before it gets blacklisted and then it will be their problem. Smartphones move pretty quickly if you list it for the right price... People just can't help themselves when they see an iphone below market value, even though it should raise red flags.

Stolen iPhones are a huge entity over-seas as well. It’s not even so much for parts, general consumers are too smart today, they know to check the IMEI and with their carrier to see if the phone is even operable or stolen in the first place, criminals take these phones and sell them overseas for a black market trade off.
