So, I know what you're thinking... You have been using an iPhone 7 THAT LONG, what do you expect?

Well, to be honest, I did purchase it a few years ago refurbished, but I had it unused in a box the whole time, until a few months ago. So I was surprised that since last week, suddenly it just dies around lunch time the moment I try to load up my apps. It always shows almost full batt power, but then it craps out, reboots... and asks me to recharge.

When I check the system settings, it states there is an issue with the battery.

I guess either when you buy an iPhone they refuse to check/swap the crappy batts in these things, or even if you don't use it for 2-3 years, the cheapo batts just die anyway.

Really annoys me.

Does this really make sense, or could it be a chip issue instead? If it sounds like the batteries are really this crappo, then I may just purchase another batt from Amazon, just as cheap but at more proper a discount cost in relation to quality. Then I'll swap it out myself.

Before I attempt to do so, thought I'd do some proper due diligence and check in with some of the experts here.

Thanks!

It’s not about the batteries being cheap or crappy. It’s about the chemistry of lithium batteries. If you let one sit on the shelf for several years completely discharged, it could damage it. They have a lot of good aspects to them, but longevity is not one of them.

If the phone runs normally plugged in, I’d say it’s the battery. I don’t know about batteries on Amazon. If you’re in the USA, you’re probably better off going to the Apple Store. They will replace it for $69 including parts. If you try to do it yourself there’s a risk you could damage something. If you’re outside the USA and not near an Apple store, you might not have a choice.

Battery aging, my friend.

You can't just leave the phone in a box uncharged. It will dip below the minimum voltage and permanently reduce battery capacity and increase internal resistance. This resistance means when you fire up a hungry app like the camera, it'll shut down due to inability to supply enough current.

Oh wow, I literally put 2 iPhone 7's in the bin about 6 months ago with clearing out our home office. I didn't realise people were still using them as they haven't had support for ages.

When you got the phone refurbished, did it have a new battery in it and do you know if its an Apple OEM battery?

I have no idea. I guess we'll find out if there's an Apple logo when I lift the battery.

They’re still useful multimedia devices which can run almost the entire app suite. I have an OGSE & 6S which are periodically used for video streaming via Netflix, Disney+, Prime and YouTube along with music & podcast streaming and some web-browsing. These phones are still suitable for running trading and banking applications also. You could easily main one in 2025 as long as you’ve had a battery service.

I wouldn’t consider them to be e-waste unless they were in poor condition.

Me too - I still have an iPhone 7 - I have it connected via bluetooth to a cordless phone with several handsets i.e. it gets little to no use. I think it is age. Mine says 88% battery health but it drains quickly. I charged it yesterday, did not get or make any calls and it was at 26% this morning. I guess the bluetooth is killing it but I used to easily go four days without charging. I'm going to replace it with my iPhone 12 as soon as I replace it.

I think I have to give up on this phone. Replaced the battery. And it SEEMED to hold charge all night, but as soon as I tried to use it around lunch-time today it went into a similar pattern. keeps re-booting or shutting down every minute. And every time it boots up, the battery rating changes sometimes by 50% up or down.

I tried hard reset, no change. I give up... Time to get an Android.

From what I read, a lot of people get odd stuff like this when the case bends from sitting down with the iPhone 7 in the back pocket.

I really miss the old iPhone 5, that thing was sturdy and tuff as nuts. The body is too thin and flim now adays.
