iPhone 7........no alert with messages?

Hi Guys
With the wife's iPhone 7,
When a message is received , the selected text tone is intermittent ,
that is, sometimes the tone works, sometimes it doesn't ?
is the phone faulty

Could be many things:

1. Ring / Silent switch is being turned off sometimes.
2. Ringer volume is sometimes set to zero.
3. Do Not Disturb or Do Not Disturb While Driving is turned on.
4. Go To Settings -> Notification -> Messages. Make sure Allow Notifications and the sound settings are set up correctly.
