I'm very excited about the new camera system on iPhone 7 Plus. Got my iPhone 7 Plus yesterday and immediately updated to iOS 10.1 beta. I've been trying the cameras quite a bit today including the portrait mode. My feeling is:
(i) The wide-angle camera is slightly improved compared to 6S thanks to the f/1.8 aperture. It performs decently in low light but don't expect magic.
(ii) The image quality of the telephoto camera is quite a bit worse compared to the wide-angle one, especially in low light. I find it very easy to get blurry images in low light due to the lack of OIS and the picture tends to be noisy and grainy. Nevertheless, it is a huge improvement over the digital zoom or cropping on the previous generation.
(iii) The portrait mode is *better* than I expected. (I've been using DSLR/Mirrorless for many many years). Although it has a few limitations: You have to be within a certain distance to your main object; It takes more than a second to take a picture, hence not suitable for moving objects; If the contrast between your main object and the background is big, it is likely to show a distinct bright edge around your main object.
