Preorder-and-pick-up is available right now. (Or rather, it was - at least for my local store, there's no more stock available for this method.)

Are you referring to a non-Apple local store?...because I thought reservations in the US don't start until the 17th.

No, I mean an official Apple brick-and-mortar. Reservations with the purchase and pickup in store will begin the 17th, yes. But we are not reserving for later purchase - we are purchasing NOW, and will simply be picking up the phone from an Apple store rather than having it shipped to us.

Based on the MacRumors article it looks like you'd go to Apple's reservation page, pick the store and phone, then when it's available you'd go to the store and do the whole purchase process, just as if you were a regular walk-in customer.
