I put the GM iOS12 on my iPhone 7+ and it runs real smooth. I have about 400 battery cycles on it and instead of spending the delta of hundreds of dollars on the XS Max, it's it really smarter to just get a new $29 battery by the end of the year and hang onto this 7+?

I get that the processor will be 2 gen behind and a number of the added "features", but I tried Face ID briefly on the X and much prefer the fingerprint "button" on these older models. Wireless charging isn't a big deal to me (if it was, I might consider the 8+), but from a camera, screen size, weight, speed, signal (I'm on T-Mobile which works fine for me) and operation standpoint, this 7+ seems like the iPhone that could still have a good life for a couple more years.

Am I missing something really really novel that is worth spending the cash? I can buy a lot of stuff for the delta between selling/trading this 7+ for a new XS Max. Thanks!

This goes along with my thinking too. I have 97% battery. Life so getting a new battery isn’t close to needing changed out, and even if I end up doing that at the higher battery cost that is coming soon, it is still a whole lot cheaper than any of the new X’s would be.

I had given the Xr serious consideration as it would do all I would want, with one exception. And that is reading ebooks, just don’t like it on the phone shape. I had thought that the Xr would be a good thing to replace my 7+ and older iPad Mini and even went to the Verizon to look at the Note 9, which is similar in size. Didn’t like the aspect ratio for book reading.

XR is one that is tempting to me as well. Not as sharp of a screen (per the specs) which concerns me, but may be a good size balance, fit better in hand, and supposedly gives increased battery life compared to the 7+ and 8+ as well. But we'll need to wait until late October to try them out at the stores :/

I have a 7+ purchased on launch day and bought a Xs Max.. the price point really caused me to question if it’s worth it.. I’m excited about Face ID though and my mother in law needs an upgrade from her 5c (she can’t afford a new one)... so I went for the purchase and will pass the 7+ down to her.

My battery on the 7+ seems to be lessening, but there’s nothing wrong at all with its performance. I feel like it’s in a better place than my original 6+ was when I sold it after 2 years of use.

I'm still using a ip6+ (on iOS 9.3.5 ha) and it's time for me to upgrade this phone cuz I'm sick of the 1GB of ram and the speaker sound is distorted. Although iOS 12 will get me back into the 21st century, the RAM wall can't be fixed.

Since I can't tolerate the flickering from the X OLED screens (and PWM hasn't been changed on the Xs models) and the Xr has an inferior screen to any of the Plus phones, and the 8 Plus isn't a significant upgrade that I'd notice from the 7 Plus.... A new 7 plus 128 will be MY new phone after using my 6 Plus for three years.

Maybe when Apple puts an eye friendly screen on their future phone (microLED) I'll get a new model. But until then, I'll stick with 401ppi LCD.

No it’s not the best for me. First? I don’t have an iPhone 7. Second, there is a new iPhone coming out next week. Goodbye my iPhone X. Hello iPhone Xs Max!!

Also, if a good deal is found on one, is an 8+ really noticeably better than the 7+? I don't plan to use wireless charging and the 7+ seems to be a little bit thinner and lighter as well.

There’s little reason for most people to upgrade past a 7 series right now apart from tech lust.

That’s disappointing to hear. I thought it would be better for reading.

My iPhone 7+ is at 84% capacity (according to Battery Health). Should I replace battery before end of year?

It depends n your situation. If iOS was throttling my phone then I’d get it replaced. And at only $29 I think that would be a bargain in comparison to buying a new phone. If I were planning on a new phone in the next couple months, I might not.

Thanks — yeah, for sure, I would only do it if I decide to keep it long-term (which would be the sensible thing to do!)

I think the 8 Plus is the better longevity phone, because the A11 chip is monstrously powerful. Wireless charging is nice when you’re in public places where the security of USB ports are suspect. The 7 Plus is still powerful enough that it’s good two iOS versions later, but I think the 8 Plus will last even longer, because of how good the A11 is.

That’s just my opinion, but if you’re looking to retain Touch ID or the 6/7/8 form factor, the 8 Plus is the one to have IMO. There are also some nice smaller benefits like TrueTone too.

If this year Apple had only announced a Xs and a 9/9 Plus with the old form factor but feature parity with the Xs (Smart HDR and A12 chip and whatnot), I wouldn’t have upgraded from the 8 Plus. The last time I felt that way was with the 5s. Both the 5s and the 8 Plus felt like phones that were so good at the time that the only thing that could have compelled me to upgrade from them for years would have been a new larger form factor. And it just so happened that is exactly what Apple did after both of those phones.
