iPhone 8(plus) pickup in-store

When you go pickup your phone at the store, do they force you to activate it then and there? Or can you take it with you and activate it later?

I am waiting on both of mine. A little bit early but I bought both sim free so they shouldn't for me.

They have always given me the option
like now, I am only activating in the store because I traded in my current.... gotta have a working phone ya know

Since I kept my old iPhone 6S+ as i’m giving it to my mom (unless she doesn’t want it and i sell it), I was able to take the phone home with me and set it up myself. Think it was the first iphone I bought at launch and the first iphone I was able to setup on my own.

No.. They gave me the option at the Apple Store. They can do the activation without even opening the box. Makes me wonder if they have embedded sims as they asked me what carrier I had before bringing out the box.
