With iOS 11 Beta 1, two things stand out as signalling some kind of change to the function of the power button.

Firstly, the ability to shut down in Settings is redundant unless this functionality were to be no longer possible using the physical button.

Secondly, the combined notification centre and lockscreen signals that the new iPhone may be locked by swiping down, rather than using the button.

However, this brings into question how one would view notifications and act on them, without locking the phone.

Thoughts?

I was wondering about this too. My theory was even farther fetched.

Rumor has it that the home button will be gone. A few rumors also stated that there would be an elongated power/lock button possibly with TouchID. What if..... they shifted the Home button's functionality all to the lock button? Power-off is now in settings and locking the phone somehow involves swiping down.

I won't rule out that Apple might be able to find a way to make this work, but it sounds like a terrible design choice at the moment.

I don't think it would be too difficult a problem for Apple to solve.

Activator, which is a jailbreak tweak, has been around since December 2009 and it's claim to fame is reassigining physical buttons and screen gestures to do other actions.

If Ryan Petrich can figure it out I'm pretty sure Apple can.
