Was passing my local Apple retailer (Scotsys, Edinburgh, UK) yesterday and noticed they had some iphone posters up with £899 on them, unfortunately couldn't stop, but wonder if this is the sim-free price or they are just advertising the total cost of contract+handset over 3 years.

Might have to try to go in later this week to find out more.

They don't sell iPhones so why advertise at all seems odd! I remember at the opening of the apple store in Glasgow they were handing out flyers saying their macs were cheaper.

That's because they are just a local apple retailer trying to sell some grey market iphones.

Maybe they were selling unlocked ones for (say) £500 and were showing the £899 price to illustrate how much "cheaper" they are. Of course, if you buy an unlocked phone you still have to pay for a contract with someone so you can't completely ignore monthly costs either way...

Managed to get another drive past today and had a better look. the advert seems to be a Scotsys produced one, not one Apple has asked them to put up and as we know that independent Apple resellers like Scotsys cannot sell the iPhone it appears they are using this to try to sell more iPod Touches.

The advert has an iPhone and iPod Touch side by side with prices above £899 and £269 respectively, then the caption "Spot the Difference" seems as if they are saying most functions are identical so why buy the phone basically.

Not sure if they will fall foul of Apple on this one though.
