I am currently a student and will be going abroad to London next semester. I really have 2 main concerns when it comes to my phone. 1) I dont want to pay ATT for another year of data when I'm going to be abroad for half of the year and 2) i'd like to bring my phone with me and ideally use it in England (can deal without data). Is anyone familiar with this situation, and if so, what are my options?

yea dont use att roaming overseas. unlock your iphone and use a uk carrier.

Does unlocking void my warranty? Also, do I still have to pay ATT?

you should do some reading here

and yes it will technically void your warranty. if anything happens to it you will need to undo all the unlocking/jailbreaking and return it to stock form.

if you unlock, you will be able to use another carriers sim card. meaning you will be paying them and not att.

i understand that, but i signed a 2 year contract with att. I am still within the 2 years. Is there any way to avoid paying for service I will not be using? like canceling the line for 6 months?

oh i see. well your options are as i see them:

1. pay the etf
2. call att and see if they will put a hold on your account. basically ask if you can stop your contract and pick up where you left off when you get back. i have no idea if they allow this but its worth a shot.
3. continue to pay the att service for the 6 months
