iPhone Activation without AT&T - Jailbreak the only way?

I was wondering if there's any other options to activating my iPhone without AT&T? I am sure I want an iPhone instead of iPod touch because the touch is too crippled for my uses.

I am aware of the jailbreak method. Is it safe?

The other method I can think of is getting a Go Plan, but I'm not sure if it still works and if people still get those annoying pop ups about how much they have left on the account. More about that here. Personally, I prefer the method because I could use prepaid cards if I really need a phone, but it doesn't sound like it's working anymore.

Yes, you'll have to jailbreak it or use one of those unlocking softwares if you want to use a Tmobile account.

Oh. I don't mean switch carriers. I'm one of those people that want an iPhone minus the phone.

Yep, jailbreak would be the easiest and best bet IMO.
