This is more a question with terminology. The terms Jailbreak, Unlock and Activate all have distinct meaning, as defined in the guide stickied in this forum. However, I just want to clarify something to ensure I am not instructing someone in the wrong way.
Here's the story, I am purchasing a 1st gen iPhone from someone who recently got a 3GS. They want to wipe the phone clean of all data and it is currently jailbroken. I suggested that they simply restore the iPhone through iTunes which should delete everything and update it to the firmware chosen during the restore. I also looked at this guide which confirmed by thoughts.
However, I believe once you restore an iPhone you will be unable to use it without an AT&T activation, correct? This is where my concern comes in for the most part. I will be 'jailbreaking and unlocking the phone' but does this include the 'activation' which is required before all of that? I plan on using redsn0w 0.8 to do this. My worry is that I will receive the iPhone from him and be unable to jailbreak it properly after the restore or may brick it. Correct me if I'm wrong but these are the general steps I need to follow after receiving the restored, supposed factory settings, iPhone:
Restore/Update (not sure the correct term) in iTunes to the latest firmware 3.0.1.
Use redsn0w with the 3.0.0 firmware and both the BL 3.9 and 4.6 files, to unlock/jailbreak the 1st gen iPhone
redsn0w, from my understanding will jailbreak and unlock the 1st gen iPhone automatically, simply by following it's on screen instructions and providing it with the 3.0.0 firmware ispw file, correct? However, does it also activate the iPhone as well to allow it to be used? I know this may seem like a silly question but I think it's better to ask and confirm, as opposed to assuming and being surprised when it comes down to jailbreaking it.
If it's necessary, I will be using my T-Mobile SIM card in the iPhone after it's unlocked, without a data plan, and simply relying on wi-fi for data which is nearly ubiquitous where I am a majority of the time.
Thanks in advance!
