I do everything through my iPhone, both personal and business. I use the Files app to access all my files that are stored on iCloud Drive. I only sit down at my desktop computer (Mac Mini) approximately once per month to back up my iCloud Drive files to a thumb drive and go to the odd website that won’t work properly on the iPhone.

My old Mac Mini finally pooped the bed and won’t turn on. It’s actually refreshing for me because I would like to get rid of that desk and put a sitting area in its place.

My question is if I remove that computer from iCloud, will I lose all of the files I have in the Documents and Desktop folder in iCloud Drive? I am asking this in the iPhone forum because I need all of those files to access from my iPhone. Will the file system work without a desktop computer and only an iPhone?

As a secondary question on the same topic, would I be able to buy a cheap Chromebook and download my files from iCloud Drive on the iCloud website to a thumb drive? I would like to be able to back up my files that I use on the iPhone, but I see no need to buy an expensive Mac computer when it’s only used for something so basic.

I have been using Chromebooks since they were in beta. I see no reason why you could not back the iCloud drive to a thumb drive.

If they were backed up successfully from your Mac Mini, those files should all be on iCloud and you should be able to see them using the Files app on your iPhone, and they wouldn't be deleted just because your Mac doesn't work anymore.

But if you want to be sure, you can just move (or copy) those files to a separate folder on iCloud.

I think you can download them off of the iCloud website onto your Chromebook, and transfer it to a thumb drive from there.

Thank you for the replies!

My main concern was that when I remove the Mac mini from iCloud it would remove all of the files.
