iphone and international precautions

I want to take my iphone with me to Europe for the ability for pictures and music at night (as well as have a phone when I get back in the states while at airport,etc)

Are these precautions sufficient to avoid ANY and ALL charges. I want NO surprise bills

1) Data Roaming: Off
2) Cellular Data: Off
3) Airplane Mode: On

I realize that Airplane mode alone may be sufficient itself. Anything I am missing?

As long as you are in airplane mode you are set to go and should be sufficient.

You will only get a charge if the phone actually connects to a cell tower overseas. Putting it in airplane mode prevents it from connecting to a cell tower and therefore there will be no surprise charges.

If you want to can get an unlock and a local sim also.

Can you not just remove the SIM ?!

You'll be fine as long as it's in Airplane Mode. Just remember to turn WiFi back on after enabling it since it kills that as well. WiFi use won't cost you anything and you never know if the place you're staying or if any local businesses offer it for free.

Not all iPhones use SIM cards.
