Critical Apple suppliers who produce iPhones and MacBooks have suspended production in key locations amid new restrictions and lockdowns that threaten an already constrained supply chain, Nikkei Asia reports.

Citing a stock exchange filing, Nikkei Asia reports that Pegatron, one of Apple's leading iPhone suppliers after Foxconn, has suspended iPhone production at its facilities in Shanghai and Kunshan. The two sites are Pegatron's only two production sites that make iPhones, with the supplier responsible for 20-30% of all iPhones made, the report added.

Another Apple supplier, Quanta, responsible for MacBook Air and MacBook Pro production, has revealed that production has been suspended in Shanghai since the start of the month. Dozens of other suppliers, directly and indirectly part of Apple's supply chain, are also seeing operations disrupted.

Apple has dealt with a constrained supply chain for some time now, with product availability and supply fluctuating over several months. Apple will announce Q2 earnings for the year on April 28 where company executives are likely to provide some context on how the supply chain is doing.

So then what would be the method to solve this? Surely they can’t have that many customers waiting for a long time for product deliveries…

We've been waiting for 10 MBP 16 (custom ordered to 64GB) since mid-January! I was told last week (by BestBuy) that the status had changed to "Prepared for Shipping". I checked and, generally, it means they should ship in a couple of days. But I'm wondering how others are seeing this now with their orders?

I waited 10 weeks for my 16” loaded Max. It’ll be twice that for current orders at least.
It was 8 weeks for mine, and the spare power supply I ordered for it at the same time, arrived a week later (the other cables and adapters I ordered showed up within a couple days of ordering). Got me wondering if there are particular parts that are holding up final assembly on some machines/orders.

Most definitely, just like with cars there are certain items made in places having outbreaks so the production affects the final products, even if they aren't assembled in the bad area. There's really nothing to be done about it either, we're going to continue to have outbreaks as COVID evolves and people don't get vaccinated or wear masks.

Worth adding that as well as the factories themselves, it's heavily affecting exports out of the country and many systems built and ready are currently stuck in a huge back log of shipments waiting for a place on the plane.

Launch of new products may be delayed if lockdowns continue.

Unfortunately Apple won't delay their launch schedule for anything - they just release products you can't get hold of. This started with the 24-inch iMac which was almost unobtaibable and still isn't as readily available as it should be - and huge builds with peaker with the M1 Max processors - and now continues in the Mac Studio...these items might be "released" but they're all extremely hard to get hold of and with the silcion shortage on top this won't change for at least another year or more.

M1 iMac has been available since day 1 in my country. Tons of refurb models too.
