I have two computers (running Thunderbird) and an iPhone (running Mail), they all use IMAP to connect to the same mail server, and they all are having similar problems. On the computers, clicking "Send" often causes the progress bar to freeze during "Sending login information". It will stay frozen forever. Clicking "Cancel" and then "Send" again often works. When it freezes, the message never actually gets sent, but it does get sent when I try a second time.

The iPhone problem is much worse. I click "Send". The message disappears, taking me to the inbox. The progress bar goes to 100% and then freezes at 100%. The "Mail sent" woosh sound never happens. The progress bar never goes away. The "thinking/loading" circle spins forever. And the mail never gets sent. Often rebooting the iPhone doesn't fix this - it forgets about the message it was sending, but it has the problem again if I try again. Occasionally it does work. When it works, there is never any hesitation, it sends the message fast or it never does it at all. The problem occurs on WiFi and the EDGE network.

I don't believe it is the mail server, the server is operated by my University and nobody else has this problem.

Any suggestions?
