iPhone and wi-fi

New to iPhone and networks. Managed to create a new(local) network on Macbook Pro and get iPhone to join it, but safari, mail and istore still cannot recognise this network or use it to go on the net. What am I doing wrong ??
And how do you transfer files between Mac and iPhone through this network ?

You don't. Unless you have an app downloaded and installed to do so.
