If I have an idea for an App, is there anything I can do to begin programming it now, or do I need to pay the $99 to get started? I'm assuming I need some proprietary software to get the test app on my phone via the developer community, right?

I don't mind paying it, I just want to make sure because if I don't have to I'll wait until it's done...

You can register and download the SDK for free, this gives you all the necessary tools as well as an iPhone simulator for your Mac. The $99 allows you to sync your app to your device for further testing, as well as submitting it to Apple for the App Store.

Thanks for the info! Sounds like I'll want to pay the $99 sooner rather than later anyway so I can use it on an actual device. Can I test my app in 2.2.1, or is it recommended to install 3.0 and start developing it for that? It definitely wouldn't be released until 3.0 is out or later anyway, so I guess 3.0 is the better idea?
