The iPhone page at the Apple Online Store looks pretty much ready to have a buy now button added. It also mentions nothing about O2 it simply says "Wireless Service" is a requirement - maybe they've been too lazy to change the page for each country but who knows, the news has been so patchy.

The O2 site says: "The iPhone 3G will ... be available to purchase from 11th July at 8.02am in any of our O2 high street stores. Any stores in shopping centres will open at their usual times.

It's also available at The Carphone Warehouse and Apple Stores."

But Apple says nothing about selling the phone. Is O2 just being rubbish with getting its info right or are they revealing news that Apple hasn't released?

Edit: Apple US Store does specifically say AT&T service required. But Australia has same info as UK.

I think you might be onto something here: the iPhone pages on the US and UK store are definitely different, which would seem to rule out the translation hypothesis.
