A few years ago I built my own digital picture frame. It had served me well, but I never felt that I was fully utilizing its capabilities since I had went to the trouble of outfitting it with WiFi.

Finally, I've remedied the situation. Recently I wrote some new slideshow software to run on the frame that can acquire images from various sources. The software contains an embedded web server, and it serves up an iPhone-optimized interface that lets me control my digital frame. So now, when friends are over and they mention they'd like to see pictures from our last vacation, I simply whip out my iPhone, make a couple touches, and their wish is granted! I also used Safari 3 to make a web clip dashboard widget of the control page, and it really works well- so well that I skipped the idea of developing a dedicated widget.

The software I wrote to do this is released as open source so if you're free to download and try it. I suppose even if you don't have a digital picture frame, this could be used in "kiosk" mode on a computer.

Note: I'm not a strong visual elements person, so the iPhone UI could be better. Just in case anyone interested in using the software would like to lend a hand ;)
