Does anyone use their iPhone as a Dashcam? I've seen some third party apps around, wonder how good it is in real life.

It'll easily overheat during the summer. Spend the $40 for a proper dashcam. It'll be properly mounted with adhesive so it doesn't detach during an accident.

A dashcam is inexpensive and you don't need to bother about taking it off the every time you leave your car. If you forget to take your iPhone with you, you may not find it when you are back.
I don't have any dash cam but I have used it to record when I drive though scenic route.

Although the earlier post regarding the mounting issues are true, using an iPhone as a Dashcam Recorder also brings some very nice advantages. Your footage is secure on your iPhone, nobody can view (find out where you live), steal or delete the videos. You can sync to the iCloud so you have unlimited storage and there is no need to copy files. These cheap "real" dash cams are not build to last and the video and battery capacity is really bad, especially compared to the iPhone. With the iPhone you could record in 4K ;) Another possible issue is the video format of these cheap dash cams, you have to make sure you can play it on macOS ...

Who’s bothering to view your dash cam videos? Why would you need good battery life? Dash cams are powered by the car. $100 dash cams record using H.265 in 4K.

I have had a discrete blackvue dashcam for 6 years. None of what you have mentioned is an issue.
