figured I’d share this here as I hadn’t seen it posted before, but have found it super useful for my needs.

I used to carry a laptop when I would travel. Then I replaced that with an iPad. For a four day business trip I’m currently on, I was trying to keep my bag as light as possible and decided to skip both & just bring my iPhone.

I can already use my iPhone for 90% of what I need when I travel (I do have to carry a work laptop, so this was to replace my personal computer/iPad. I figured if I missed out on something during this trial run, I could just use my work laptop in a pinch, so it was a good time to try this).

Long story short, it’s worked great. And I think for travel, I will probably just use this as my setup going forward, even on personal trips where I’m not carrying my work laptop.

I brought the iPhone (which I carry anyways), an external Bluetooth keyboard, Jump Desktop to remote into my Mac for those few items I can’t do on my phone directly., the Citrix x1 Mouse to use with Jump desktop, an HDMI cable (I carry this with me on all my trips to use the hotel TV’s as second monitors for my work laptop), and the Apple Lighting to HDMI connector so that I can use the TV as my monitor.

It’s a little bit laggy when remoting back into my computer, but its not bad & when I’m traveling, I’m not looking to use my computer a ton, but there are some things I need to do. This setup weights almost nothing, takes up almost no space (especially since I’m carrying the phone anyways) and gives me a larger screen than my laptop or iPad.

Not sure if this would work for anyone else, but figured I’d post it in case someone is looking to lighten their travel electronics load and doesn’t need to do super heavy lifting from the phone.

i do something similar.
when i am on a 1 or 2 day business trip where i know i won't have a lot to down time other than work and sleep, i used to take along my MacBook Air.
but these days i only take my iPhone + (mac bluetooth) magic keyboard. i use iCloud to have all my documents access as well.
i also take along the Lightning to VGA adapter for making Keynote presentations or showing iPhoto photos directly from my iPhone
iOS Mail, apple Numbers, Keynote, and Pages are all fine in this setup.

I keep a cheap Acer laptop at the office that I use for this purpose. Windows 10 Pro there, plus Jump Desktop on my iPhone XS Max, a very lightweight folding keyboard from Amazon, and a Citrix X1 mouse together make an excellent travel setup. Adding a lightning to HDMI adapter to connect to a TV or monitor makes it almost magical.

Of course I’d always rather use MacOS, but RDP in Windows offers dynamic screen resizing and seems a bit more responsive than VNC or Jump’s Fluid. Jump Desktop was just recently updated to offer dynamic resolution switching with Fluid, which is awesome but still a little clunkier. I also happen to like using Windows in portrait mode while on the go, which works surprisingly well.
