iPhone 13 Pro iPhone ATT Trade In - Must you use your Own iPhone?

Hi everyone
I just preordered an iPhone 13 for my wife to replace an iPhone 6. That has no value. The ATT sales guy suggested I buy a $350 iPhone XS and use that to get the $1000 free trade in deal. However, that XS is not my wife’s original iPhone.
Question: can I really do this?

Just fyi, iPhone XS Max is the one you want for $1000 trade-in value. iPhone XS is only worth $800.
