This is extremely minor but has always bugged me nevertheless.....

Why does the iPhone 4, ALWAYS (well mine always does!!) correct me whenever I type the word, 'white'?

i.e. - when I'm typing the word 'white' - my iPhone 4 always auto corrects it to 'White' - even when its in the middle of a sentence :confused:

I think it's more to do with the white house than it being a surname

I understand your frustration...My friend's phone always replaces the word "in" with "I'n" which I really don't understand. If you go into settings there is an option to reset the keyboard dictionary that might be worth a try.

That makes no sense at all; my phone doesn't auto cap "white" nor "white house."

I wish the text input was more predictive and less corrective; it's forever attempting to split word into two :(

If there is someone in your contacts with the last name White then that will be the reason it's auto correcting it

Mine always tries to correct "asst." (as in assistant) to Asst. I don't even know what an Asst is let alone why it should be capitalised.

I wish the dictionary would learn.

auto-correct is one of the worst parts of iOS. I really hope they fix it.. just horrible. it doesn't figure out simple words but then will come up with whack ones.

Or, at the very least, have the option of turning it off.

I also wish it would recognise web addresses so it wouldn't try and write www.Google.Co.UK

Maybe the original poster frequently writes "White" and the phone has learned that as a new word?

......actually no - I never write the word, 'White'. I only ever write, 'white' (with no capital) but my iPhone ALWAYS auto-corrects it (incorrectly) to, 'White'. And I also do not have ANY contacts with the name, 'White' either so these 2 possible reasons are both invalid!

.....some other poster recommended I try resetting the dictionary - anyone know exactly what this actually does?! :S

That was me too...I would assume that would cause the phone to unlearn any words it has learned from how you type. For some reason it has picked up White. The disadvantage is that the phone would lose all the words it has learned from you. I suggested it to my friend who always has the phone correcting in to I'n, but he didn't it to lose all the words the phone learned

You can reset the keyboard dictionary and this will fix most of the auto correct problems.

Settings > General > Reset > Reset keyboard dictionary.

I find more positives than negatives with the auto-correct feature. It predicts many words and saves keystrokes for me more than it tries to "correct" words I spell a certain way.
