Hello everyone,

First time poster – I’m in a bit of a pickle. Very grateful for any advice and grateful if you limit the inevitable comments about old hardware and software, I know!...

I’m running an iBook with 10.4.11. I did have an iPhone 3G 16gb, which synced fine and is backed up on the iBook.

Unfortunately, the iPhone had an accident.

I’m due to receive some insurance cash for a replacement.

First question: I have a feeling they will only offer me enough cash for a 3GS. Apple annoyingly only make 8GB 3GSs now, will my backup fit on there? 16GB doesn’t go into 8GB obviously but I have a feeling the backup is only a small file, backing up programs, address book and SMSs. Is that correct? Should I worry?

Second question: I may be offered enough cash for an iPhone 4. Unfortunately, Apple have once again made things difficult for me. The iPhone 4 only works with 10.5.8. Now I could upgrade – although 10.5 disks are rare and expensive (and of course, I can’t go down the cheap option of 10.6 as this is a PPC Mac). Could I move my backup file (from /Library/Application Support/MobileSync/Backup) to a friend’s MacBook Pro and restore my address book and contacts from there? I don’t mind if I can’t sync media for now. How safe and easy is it to transfer backups to other computers?

Many many thanks.
