iphone backups on hd other then startup?

Hello,

I have a mac pro '09. The startup disk is a 128gb ssd, and the external is a large 2 tb hhd.

I am having problems with my iphone backups, (new iphone, 128gb). I would like to store the backups on the external HD, and I found this tutorial that suggets I made a symbolic link of my backups folder:

However, since my hhd is an internal drive i do not think it will work!

Any suggestions on how to have a usable backups iphone folder on another internal hd on my mac pro??
