iPhone Calendar - Cannot enter birthdays

Although I have checked both Calendar and Birthdays in my iPhone Calendar, when I add a new event, I cannot find where to choose to add an item specifically to birthdays. I know it must be something very obvious, but I'm just not seeing it. Can someone help? Thanks.

I think you have to have the person in your Contacts, then edit-add field-enter birthdate there.
