It seems as though the new 64gb iPhone 5shas less hard drive space available then previous models 56gb, is this due to the new ios possibly? I could be mistaken it just seemed like there was 59gb previously

There is no way that any 64GB model only has 56GB. Show proof?

Actual capacity for my two iPhones:

iPhone 5S/ 64gb/ ATT- 56.7gb

iPhone 4S/ 64gb/ ATT- 57.2gb

Wait a minute. 56GB out of 64GB means that 8GB is used for the OS and built in apps...

Does that mean that the 16GB phone I ordered will only have 8GB of available storage?

Actual capacity will be somewhere on the high end of 13.XX gb or the low end of 14.XX gb.

There is no way that this has not already been explained.

I understand that a phone sold as 64gb doesn't in reality have that space available, my thoughts were that it seemed lower than precious models I've had, if you don't have anything thing positive to add don't comment goof

----------

The scandal over the s4 was that the hard drive had only 9 gb with a 16 gb model, the iPhone is minus 7 gb on the 64 model this is the exact same issue, why is it so hard to put 71gb of storage and sell as 64gb?

That'd be too expensive /s

I was responding to the incredulous chap below you.

Why it's less than typical is strange, because I thought iOS7 was lighter weight, since it has so many more vectors and fewer rasterized graphics and gradients.

Small thing, but the term would be storage capacity, or you can call it flash memory space.

Hard drive implies rotating magnetic platters.

why is it so hard to put 71gb of storage and sell as 64gb?

Because they manufacture chips and capacities are in specific binary numbers, not random ones.

When Apple says 64GB, they mean 64,000,000,000 Bytes. Convert that to real GBs which is 59GB. So the OS is only 3GB.

So for your phone that's 11.9GB free after conversions.

Just an FYI for anyone who needs this info: my new 16 GB iphone 5s had 12.3 GB of free space when it was turned on for the first time, before downloading any apps or setting up any mail or messaging or anything.
