I'm trying to buy an iPhone for my family member for Christmas on Apple.com. We are all on the same Tmobile family account. I want to pay in full and have the phone unlocked. If I pick Tmobile for carrier it asks for a phone number and passcode. If I use the family member's phone number the passcode doesn't work because its my passcode for the main account. If I use my phone number the passcode works, but I don't want the new phone tied to my phone number when it is activated (it needs to be tied to the family member's number).

Question is if I order the new phone under my phone number on Apple.com will my family member be able to activate it to his phone number, or will the eSim be already come tied to my phone number? I see an option to pay an extra $30 to not activate it, but that seems silly since I will be activating it.

Pay in full and pick connect to carrier later option. That should solve your dilemma.

Since it will be activated to Tmobile I was trying to avoid the extra $30, but if that's what you have to do I guess it is a small price in the scheme of things... 🤷‍♂️
