My Iphone 3G is currently running on 4.2.1 however, Itunes is saying that there is an update availble for it. I was under the impression that there was nothing beyond 4.2.1 for 3G.

Does anyone have any ideas?

The most current iOS for the 3G is 4.2.1, however a carrier update is something completely different. This isn't something from Apple, it is an update from the carrier. They generally contain tweaks for carrier settings, APN, etc.

By carrier you mean network provider? as my provider is GiffGaff. But this update is coming through Itunes.

Most of the time it pops up on your iPhone but sometimes it will come up on iTunes when your iPhone is plugged in.

Just click update. You won't notice a thing.
