I’m shopping for a case for my new iPhone 13 and I’ve got it narrowed down to two, one has microfiber lining and the other does not.

I like the one without microfiber lining a little more, it looks a little better, it has apparently better drop protection, and feels a bit more rigid. The other one is nice too, has microfiber lining, but feels slightly more flexible especially around the edges.

How important is the microfiber lining?

I would say not at all. The chances of inside your case scratching the backside of the phone is almost zero.

Not essential. Only way it would be is if the case had gaps all around for dust/grit to sneak in behind the phone & then the phone would have to be so loose that it'd move around, causing the grit to potentially scratch the back of it.

If the case is that poorly made, then it's not worth it anyway.

Just get the case without the microfibre lining, but if you remove it for whatever reason, give it & your phone a clean before putting in back on (this also applies to cases with microfibre lining).

The Apple clear case does not have microfiber lining.
However, relative hardness of materials will likely be just as, if not more, important
