Will a phone case (either silicon, hard plastic or metal) affect the connectivity/reception of the iPhone in anyway?
 
Metal definitely would. you're fine with silicon or rubber.

do they even have metal cases?
 
There are some aluminum cases listed on eBay, I've seen a few for the BB that some of my colleagues use and I am not too crazy about them.
