This may be more of an AT&T issue than an Apple issue, but it's interesting none the less. (Sadly I don't belong to an AT&T forum
)
Lets start from the beginning. I bought an iPhone back in November, loved it. Now on the AT&T coverage map my development is under FULL coverage for everything (except no 3G yet!) But in reality I get less than stellar service in my home. Now I realize this could just be an issue with my house being a dead zone, possibly something to do with the steel. Anyway, even outside my home on the street, I have never gotten "good" service. I get about 3 bars max. I now have a i3G and it's still the same story.
I continually have it reach 5 bars, and then drop to no service at all, then back to 5. Sometimes it happens twice in a minute, it's ridiculous. I've called AT&T, and they gave me some number to call from my phone and that there was some problem with service being routed to iPhones irregularly...it switches cell towers when it doesn't have to?? Maybe some evidence:
Well, here is a map of my area, my house being the little red...house. There is the mapping of all the cell towers in my area. (4 mile radius designated by the blue circle.) Now, assuming I'm not connected to GPS and Maps finds my location via triangulation, it shows that I am in the RED CIRCLE. This means the tower I'm connected to while in my house is within that red circle. WHY is my phone connected WAY down there?? I live next to a pretty populated area so looking at all the towers in the 4 mile radius of my house, your telling me none of them carry the AT&T signal? Hell I'd even like something close to me designated by the black circle. How can there not be a closer tower? Yes I realize that there's the possibility that there isn't one, but come on, I'm connected to somewhere out in the country!!
There is a map of individual antennas around my home. Come on!!
I haven't actually called that number the AT&T guy gave me, but any other suggestions?
EDIT: Also it seems, although irrational, that everytime I physically touch my iPhone, service drops. When it's alone on the table, it always seems to work...but as soon as I pick it up to send a text message BOOM it's gone. So frustrating. Only way I get decent service is if it's plugged into the wall and then I wager my house's electrical system works as a large antenna. But it still sporadically drops to nothing.
