iPhone compatibility across vendors

Maybe this is a dumb question, but I would like to understand the "compatibility" of the iphone 5c/s across vendors. That is, if, for example, I buy an Iphone 5c from T-mobile, and I want to change to Verizon, or ATT, can it be used or will it need to be replaced? Is there a matrix showing cross-compatibility?

You'd have to compare the tech specs with the carrier's requirements.

If you buy a phone from T-Mobile you can use it on T-Mobile. If it is unlocked (T-Mobile will unlock after you fully pay for it and have on network 40 days IIRC) or(buy full price from Apple). Similar from At&t. Verizion comes unlocked and can be used on T- and att.
