So I was wondering if there was a way/tweak that would enable me to assign contact pictures and when I would call them, the picture would appear only in the small 'box' and not as a 'wallpaper'. Thanks.

If the image is not large, then it appears as the small icon.

No it doesn't! :/
I tried that several times with 100x100 resolution pictures! Still appears as wallpaper!

This depends on how the image is assigned. If the contact is a google contact, the image will be small. If it's a local contact, the image will be big.

Yup. What rrandyy says is correct. It's really frustrating, but when you figure it out, then it's not as bad. Still annoying though.
