iphone contacts are not getting transfered!!

hi all,

i want to transfer the contacts on my iphone to the address book app on my mac but it isnt working.

this is what i did:
connect iphone to mac
sync contacts
when pop up came up, i clicked merge
no contacts came up.

i unplugged my phone and tried again, but this time theres no pop up to click merge, and still no contacts synced...
