Iphone copy photo for processing?

After having imported the photos from my camera I would like to make a new photo by cropping a part of an existing photo.
The cropping part is not the problem but how does one get a cropped photo without loosing the original image.?
I see in Iphoto no possibility to copy paste or do I miss something ??
