When I back up and copy my photos to a USB flashdrive (or the Files app); any "edited" photos lose all their edits. (no matter if jpg or heif).

How do you back up photos to retain all their info? e.g. Live photos get saved as Live and not a photo.

Are you opening the files from the flash drive of the Live Photos on an iPad or Mac, or are you opening it on a windows computer?

If it’s windows it will be static images only as file explorer doesn’t support ProRes nor any Live Photo. You’ll need to view it on imazing, iCloud , etc.

I'm opening them straight from the flash drive.
However, even if I copy a Live photo to the Files App, then copy it back to the Photos camera roll, it has become a static photo.

You should have selected to have it copied with edits

Where is the option to copy it with edits? Is this feature in the latest iOS?
If you edited a Live Photo and/or changed it’s effects or settings on it, Haptic Touch on the photo and select this:

Yes, the flashdrive plugged into the adapter, then to the lightning port.
The Photos app was direct on the iPhone to the Files App.
Transferring files via Lightning port?! You’ll need an iPhone 15 or newer with a USB-C port! Older iPhones, like the iPhone 14 Pro and earlier, can use Lightning flash drives, but you’ll need to transfer them into the app that comes with the USB stick, such as Sandisk.

Would you mind transferring photos first through Finder on your Mac, and then using your Mac to move the pictures to the USB-C drive?
