My 1st generation iPhone stopped recognizing any dock connector sometime yesterday afternoon, for either charging or syncing. Before that, I have not had any problems with the connection. I have tried a new cable and changer, but nothing happened. I have also cleaned out the dock connector and cable to try and improve the connection. I have tried both shutting the phone off and doing a soft reset, but I was unable to do either (it didn't even show the off slider, although the top button still turns off the display like normal). I was wondering if there was anything else that I could do to try and fix this (I am out of warrantee). I figure that this is a hardware problem with the iPhone, so I am guessing that I will have to open it up, but if there is a way to avoid that I would like to try it first.

If I do have to get a new phone, I am still considered to be grandfathered into the original $20 data/text plan. Also, are the text messages stored on the backup image of the iPhone so I can recover them?
