Iphone earpiece slowly gets quieter?

Has anyone noticed this?
My wife's old 4 and my 4S are both getting harder to hear people through.
The phones haven't been mistreated and have the volume fully up on them but I find myself pressing the square frame of the phone so hard against my ear in order to hear it's starting to hurt.

There's nothing wrong with either of our hearing
