Hello,
I agreed to give my old 1st gen iPhone to a friend of mine (as I've been on a 3G right now). I went and pulled it out of the storage shed, plugged it in, and booted it up. It came up just fine, prompting me to insert a SIM card (I had the phone unlocked).

Before giving it to him, I decided to update to the latest OS (which I had done on my 3G the week prior). So I plug it in to my MacBook, download the latest 3.1.3 update for the original iPhone through iTunes, run it through the latest version of Pwnage to get an ipsw, put the iPhone in restore mode, and update from the .ipsw.

I received an error, and the iPhone seems to have been bricked.

Now, when turned on, it goes straight to DFU mode (showing a cable and the iTunes logo).

When I try to update, the iPhone reboots at the "preparing iPhone" stage, and then iTunes errors out with:

"The iPhone "iPhone" could not be restored. An unknown error occurred (1611)."

I have tried this from my MacBook, Hackintosh (which errored out with (2006)?), and Windows 7 PC. The first machine I tried it on was the MacBook.

Can anyone assist? :(

If it helps, here's some bits from the log....

I had this problem with my ipod touch recently and was freaked to find references to it being a possible hardware failure. After many frustrating hours of trying every solution I found offered on the web the one that finally worked was uninstalling every Apple application from my PC. iTunes, Quicktime, Apple Application Support, Apple Mobile Device Support, Bonjour etc. Then deleted any remaining files and folders pertaining to anything Apple from *:\Program Files\, *:\Program Files\Common Files\ and finally *:\Users\Name\AppData\Local, Local Low and Roaming. The only thing I kept in my iTunes Library was my music files and my apps folder.

I then installed iTunes 9.0, wacked it into DFU mode and it restored first time. Lastly I updated to the latest iTunes reloaded my iTunes library and it has been good ever since, an added bonus to the clean out is my previously sluggish iTunes now loads and runs much faster.

I got it!

Yeah, I was similarly freaked out due to references to it being a hardware failure. I'd used Pwnage to create .ipsw's out of 3.1.3, 3.1.2, and 3.1, none of which worked. I copied those ipsw's to my Windows 7 PC, still no luck restoring.

Finally, I tried restoring from a fresh, unhacked, virgin 3.1.2 .ipsw from Apple's server.

Success! Activated with blackra1n. :)

Thanks for the help, guys.

I've had this problem before. Especially on a Mac, it's scary how tightly iTunes gets integrated into your system. Completely uninstalling it always corrected this problem for me, but it's usually a huge pain.

Sure is, took me hours to reload my library and get iTunes back the way I like it, and although I wouldn't want to do it on a regular basis I think the clean out and fresh iTunes install after 5 or 6 updates has fixed a number of performance issues I had with it.

Yep. I think sometimes you can just install over the current version with the available Apple version. Still hammers half a dozen settings. How annoying.

Hi, Can you pls. tell me what was the iTunes version you used atlast?
And did you do shift+restore for 3.1.2 .ipsw?

B'cos I had the similar issue, and keep getting 1611 in restore and the phone goes off in the restore process and not coming ON.
Thanks.
