This is the iPhone generation pattern. Type down your thoughts and how accurate could my pattern be.

Stuff added
iPhone -> iPhone 3G
1) 3G
2) GPS
3) New Casing ( Plastic )
4) More memory space
5) Available to more countries
6) New pricing schemes

iPhone 3G -> iPhone 3G S
1) Faster networks
2) Faster processor
3) Compass
4) Better camera + Video recording
5) Voice control
6) More memory space

( My guess )
iPhone 3G S -> 2010 ( 4th generation iPhone )
1) Faster processor
2) Better camera
3) Multitasking
4) Videocall camera
5) More memory space
6) New casing ( Matte )

Your thoughts?

much of what you predict is likely true (imo)
but I fail to see the pattern you speak of

Wirelessly posted (iPhone: Mozilla/5.0 (iPhone; U; CPU iPhone OS 3_0 like Mac OS X; en-us) AppleWebKit/528.18 (KHTML, like Gecko) Version/4.0 Mobile/7A341 Safari/528.16)

Good thoughts but I don't really see the pattern unless you are saying that 6 major new features per release is the pattern but that can be really subjective as to what constitutes a major new feature.

Just to add a little more to this. I'd add extended battery life to the list of new features for the 3G S. This, to me, is a big time upgrade but then you would have 7 items on your second list which would make the 6 item pattern idea null.

haha you pattern sense no makes....

this is the pattern I follow.

Mid-year, every year...new iphone.
BANG:eek: on spot everytime.

the only discovery you need to make is to find the difference between discovering a pattern and making a blind guess.

The only pattern i se with Apple is that they have to release some type of new phone mid-year every year. As the 1st gen came out the end of June 2007, contracts expire at that time. Which is why the 3GS is out now. And there will be another phone out next June. My only question is NOT about pattern: which is when the size and shape will change.

Thanks for all he replies. Well my pattern is that iPhone always has memory increases and the yearly intro of a new model, together with the 6 major features Apple always speaks of during the WWDC keynote. :D How many out of my 6 suggested for the 4th gen iphone do you think will probably come true?

What would be the point in changing the size? Screen would be silly if smaller and the rest of the phone needs to fit around it.

For what it's worth, I'd say that if screen cost of OLED comes down then that will almost certainly be in the next iPhone. The technology behind it reduces power consumption considerably due to not having to backlight the whole screen (even if it's black). This would have a dramatic effect on power consumption during video playback and continuous web use.

( My guess )

2) Better camera
3) Multitasking
4) Videocall camera
5) More memory space
6) New casing ( Matte )

Your thoughts?

It's not exactly rocket science on the above 1-5. Upgrades and refinements of hardware and software already there, and possible additional hardware and software.

As far as a faster processor goes, if they do anything they will only bump up the Cortex A8 in the 3gs by around 200 MHz which will make a small difference but not much. I doubt Apple wants to fragment the App Store every year now so my guess is the processor gets an upgrade in 2011.

There are those multiple-core cortex A9's coming out soon though so who knows...

Your thoughts?

Faster processor? Yes.
Better camera? Yes.
Multitasking? Maybe...
Front-facing camera? No. Not any time soon.
Capacity increase? That's a given.
Matte casing? No.

In other news, Summer follows Spring...

The only pattern GUARANTEED based on facts:

3GS - 4th Gen = A lot of ATT and APPLE "loyalists" complaining about upgrade pricing, contracts, order/shipping dates, etc.

Start with the biggest things with the 3GS and go from there. Forgetting ATT issues...

HD video, perhaps new 640x360 16:9 screen
OLED screen
4G?
Battery

CPU/GPU? If available, but wouldn't be surprised if these specs are static. I think gaming will be big in the next release, so we'll have to see how the current specs pan out.

OS 4.0 or sooner

Better enterprise management
Flash
Background apps

16:9 Screen?! What would be the benefit of that? TVs are 16:9 for watching movies, this is a touchscreen device. Making the screen increasingly rectangular would not be a good thing at all. I think the current aspect ratio is perfect.

I think the next generation will hail different models. Just as the computers are divided into consumer and pro, I think we will see an iPhone Nano and an iPhone Pro.

iPhone Nano
As has already been discussed, a smaller screen iPhone is a bad idea. Not only would it be awkward and fiddly to use, but every developer would need to create new UI's for the smaller screen. I think Apple would take a Macbook Air approach to the iPhone Nano, making it thinner and lighter whilst keeping the same screen.

Similar processor as iPhone 3GS, except shrunk to consume less power and space.
Same Camera as 3GS
3G + GPS
Similar in looks to the current iPod Nano with the rounded back and curved glass. Available in colours.
$99 for 8gb, $199 for 16gb

Then the iPhone Pro.
Gets the new rumoured multi core processor
5mp camera
Similar in looks to current 3GS
Better battery life
$299 for 32gb, $399 for 64gb.

People have different needs and requirements, different models are a must.

Here's the real pattern starting with the launch of 2G.

12 months of speculation
6 months of higher speculation
3 months of intense speculation
1 month of pandemonium

Followed by 1 month of disappointment and 12 more months of speculation
6 months of higher speculation
3 months of intense speculation
1 month of pandemonium

etc etc etc

To be an HD device. A 640x360 screen would be 1/2 720p. The current device size is already longer than 16x9. If the screen were to to take up more real estate the device doesn't need to be that much bigger. Plus, it would probably improve gaming for more room for touch controls. Combine that with a thinner design, I think it would be a significant improvement overall.
