1- How does the GPS work exactly?

2-Can you run your iphone on wifi? And if so, does it mean that the data wont go on your 2GB per month plan?

The GPS signal and data connection are completely separate things. They are only related when an app uses GPS and requires a data connection to display information that is relevant to your current location. For example, the Maps app needs a data connection to download map data from Google. It will use either the Wifi or 3G connection to obtain the map data, prefering a Wifi connection if one is available. Only data transmitted over the mobile phone data network counts against your data plan, Wifi data does not.
