iphone GPS while in Airplane mode?

So I do a lot of backpacking and I'd love to use the phone as a GPS device. There is never any service where I live, which is fine, but I know when the phone is looking for service it uses a lot of battery power. Is there away to turn off the cellular but still use the GPS?
