iPhone headset button customize (use in app)

Hey everyone, im looking for a way to use the headset button to activate a function inside an app. In particluar the Phonespeex app - theres a button for push to talk and i want to make it so that the headset button can also be used to talk.
I really don't know how its all made but if it was a matter of requesting the button and assigning it a function (play music by default) could this be hacked and changed?
