iPhone headset only mic is not working on 2013 iMac

Hello,

I can't remember if they ever worked but I think they did: when I plug in the iPhone headset into the 27" 2013 iMac I can hear sound through them but I can't use the mic. It won't show up either in Bootcamp as a recording devices nor in OS X.

On apple.com you can read:

Headphone/optical digital audio output (minijack)
Support for Apple iPhone headset with microphone

So what could be wrong here?

Are you sure the mic jack is fully inserted? Apple's mic jack has three rings. If you only insert the first two, the speakers will work - the mic won't. Apply a little pressure carefully if it won't fit completely. You're not supposed to see the jack anymore - it has to go in all the way (if I had a dime for every time...)

thank you for you reply. I've inserted the plug as far as possible and you can't see the metal anymore.

I've tested the headphones on the iPad to test the mic and it's working.

Has anyone else tried the iPhone headphones on a 2013 iMac?

I have both the old and the new headphones and they both work on a 2012 iMac.

Go to System Preferences > Sound > Input

What does it list as input?

Volume controls from the headset don't work. Input shows me only the iMacs internal mic.
